Today sees the first day of October and who would believe it? We had blue skies and sunshine with warm temps too. Although we did have a little frost on the lawn and some plants in my back garden first thing. Sedum Rose Carpet in my hanging basket is starting to flower and the early morning sun drew my attention to it and I found myself drawn out into the garden with my camera.
Beads of frost melting on the surface of plants sparkled as you will see in the photos above. The first two photos show sedum Rose Carpet followed by a euphorbia and a geum. The grass Klein Fontaine however showed no signs of melting beads of frost – it was beautifully light and fluffy.
As I walked around my garden the early morning sun also backlit the dark heuchera leaves which looked quite stunning too as you can see in the photos above. What a valuable plant this is – the variety of colours and the ruffled edges of its leaves add so much to the borders.
The red and orange tones also remind me of autumn and the turning of the leaves on the trees. The Acer at my back door is beginning to get quite colourful, as you can see below, but it will get a lot more so before its leaves drop. What a beautiful time of year!

It looked like a beautiful day–and you definitely took beautiful pictures of it! In the first picture of the dark-leaf heucheras I love them combined with the hostas. Luscious.

Shirl: Luscious photos is right! I thought of that word and then looked over at Kim’s post! Great minds and all…LOL No frost here yet but it was a bit chilly this a.m. Heucheras are beautiful aren’t they!

Kim – Thank-you! I took my photos very quickly and went out for the day. I was thrilled with how they came out. I so love the dark heucheras too and they do look great with the smaller hostas. This hosta is ‘June’ and is really a blue-green colour when it is not backlit with the sun 😀

Layanee – You are so kind :-). Yes, we are all quite like minded aren’t we! Our frost was only light and it didn’t cover the whole garden. Yes, these heuchera’s are wonderful – next year I might pick up the really bright lime green one 😀
These are lovely Shirl – beautiful Autumn colours. I love the sedums there are such a variety of sizes and shades of pink and white. I’m looking out for a wonderful sedum called ‘Matrona’ which I saw on my holiday in Yorkshire.

Thanks – the colours really are lovely now. I don’t mind the leaves falling either as I love to see the shapes of the trees once more.
I agree sedums are a great plant ‘Matrona’ looks very nice – I hope you find it. I had a red stemmed sedum last year but I seem to have lost it so they maybe they are more tender.

We had a beautiful 1 October too, such a glorious day. No frost so far, at night temperatures are still around 10 C. Not bad for the time of year. Lovely hangingbasket Shirl!

I love that rose carpet sedum. Cooler weather would be nice here, it was almost 90 today, but I’m not looking forward to the killing frosts.

Yolanda – October has been glorious! Our clear blue skies have been decorated with flocks of birds on the move to/from our local nature reserve. Thanks – I am very pleased with my hanging basket 😀
Robin – I picked up sedum rose carpet thinking it was okay and the initial idea was to use it as ground cover in the border below. Sitting at eye level in my hanging basket it looks fantastic 😀 Gosh Robin, 90 deg – that is a warm day! I assume that is normal for this time of year in Central Indiana, USA?
Beautiful pictures of your plants…I like heucheras and sedum too and have got several of them. For me these plants belong to the sorts for “lazy gardeners”, as they grow without any difficulties…

Thank-you! I really love the heucheras too and every year new varieties and colours seem to come out to tempt me! They are such versatile plants. I like to think plants like them are for forward thinking rather than lazy gardeners 😀
