Robin at Breakfast

In my quest to catch a better view and perhaps some video footage of a wren, I bought a small wire mesh ground feeder tray and placed it under my small domed Acer tree. This is an area that the wren has been spotted. I also saw this as a small quiet feeding area for any other birds that might find it – today’s diners were a Blackbird and a Robin.

Robin, shown above, joined me as I sat at my window having breakfast this morning. What a delight to see it up close. Unfortunately, light levels are on the low side in this area but that does make it idea for the growth of moss on the stones. I think moss on the stone/rocks can really look quite beautiful. Unfortunately there are periods when this moss is absolutely ripped up! I’ll guess the birds could be looking for insects underneath. It does eventually grow back – but if it the torn and ripped bits dry up then the birds can then use it for nesting. I did notice that after the snow melted that the birds were digging further in the soil and had been pecking up moss and small weeds at the edges of stones and paving.

Nestbox update - no interest yet.
